Counting Crows With Family

Isn't that everyone's favorite family pasttime? Sitting around the back porch counting the number of crows that fly by? Wow, that is the worst joke ever. I mean seriously Simeon. What I am trying to say is that Emily, Diana, and I went to see the Counting Crows on Wednesday at Merriweather.

Diana is in town for about a week from Hartford, CT. She came down to chill with our family and generally have a good time. She is teaching in Hartford so, her summers are pretty free. Must be nice right? To only work for 2/3 of the year. At first, I was planning on having dinner with her and Emily. Then they said, were going to see the Crows. Well, that sounds perfect to me. I haven't seen them yet this year.

Before the show, I drove back home real quick to change. The girls planned on scoping out a nice place on the lawn shortly after doors. That made my life easy. I didn't have to rush after work. Once I was in Columbia, I was suprised with the traffic. No one was around the venue! It looked really empty. I was scared the show would be poorly attended.

I had to walk down to the Main Gate to pick my ticket up at Will Call. Soon there after, I found the girls on the lawn. They laid claim to a nice large spot 20 or so yards from the pavilion center stage. We were able to sit and chat before the opener - Graham Colton Band. Georgia Avenue played with these guys. Their really nice people. Lucky to be out on the road. I just don't think their music is that great. It all sounds the same. I didn't really enjoy the set. It gave us some time to talk some more.

The fun began once Adam and the Crows took the stage. The venue had filled in and the sun was almost down. Adam told the crowd he was so full of steriods he would not be able to compete in the olympics. Appearently, his voice was almost gone. This show was the last on the tour. Plus, it was close to home. He said a lot of family and friends were at the show. Finally, he said the show would be more acoustic then normal. Well, I am cool with all that. Checkout the setlist.

I mean, damn. How can it get better then that? Have you seen me lately, Richard Manuel, & Mr. Jones were all acoustic. Four white stallions is a song they really haven't play on any regularity since the August and Everything After days. Greatful Dead cover Friend of the devil? Sweet. The set just kept going. My favorite song, Omaha. I was loving it. Colorblind??? I had never heard that song live before. They really gave it a lot of emotion. I thought of how much Pmoore likes the tune. From there, every song was strong. I do have to say, Accidentally in Love is decent. Adam explained it was about a situation earlier this year. He had left his heart out there for the wrong girl and fell in love. Sad, don't you think? I really enjoyed the Hanging Around encore. A bunch of band member's families were on stage. There were even a pair of 1 maybe 2 year old twins wearing protective headphones. They were so cute. I was not expecting a second encore, but the house lights never went up. I was shocked to here Holiday In Spain. This song contains one of my favorite Crows quotes.

"Everybody's gone
They left the television screaming that the radio's on
Someone stole my shoes
But there's a couple of bananas and a bottle of booze
Oh, well happy new year's baby
We could probably fix it if we clean it up all day
Or we could simply pack our bags
And catch a plane to Barcelona 'cause this city's a drag"

Yea cathing a plane to Barcelona. Awesome. What a way to close the show and a tour.

The girls had a great time as well. Both Diana and Emily were dancing and singing during the show. It was so much fun. I was glad we got to spend time together, and see a concert at the same time! Perfect. Im looking forward to tonight. They are coming over to see my new house in all its gglorious orangeness.
