Cartoons For Adults?

By Simeon | November 10, 2004 10:26 AM | Comments (11)

That title is silly. Of course there are cartoon's for adults. I have been, along with many others, enjoying the Simpsons for years. Over the past few months, I started to watch a few more cartoons. No, I haven't gotten into cartoons meant for kids that adults like such as Sponge Bob Whatever. I love The Family Guy. I have also been introduced to Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Both shows are outrageously funny.

The Simpsons have been around for 16 seasons. Their first season aired in 1989. Isn't that crazy? The television show has been on air for more then half my life? The 16th began last Sunday with their popular Treehouse of Horror. This episode is normally so funny, you fall out of your chair. I was not impressed. The writers concentrated more on tearing Marge's clothes off then funny jokes. Could the behind the scenes team be slipping? I sure hope I am not correct. We'll have a few Sunday's of new episodes to find out.

The Family Guy is another show that originally aired on Fox. They have not been around quite as long. The first show aired on April 6, 1999. I remeber catching a few episodes here and there in college, but I was not hooked. Sadly, the show was canceled by Fox after three seasons. This was plenty of time for a cult following to emerge. The show flurished in DVD sales and syndication. Fox has now brought the show back into production. A fourth season is expected to air in March or May 2005. I can't wait to see what happens to this dysfunctional family from Quahog, RI.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is somewhat strange. The first time I saw an episode or two, I was scared and confused. Why are fries floating around the screen talking to an arrogant shake? They appear to be raising a young meatball in a dirty house in New Jersey? Huh? Believe me, I wanted nothing to do with this show. Last Sunday, I sat around with some friends watching the DVDs. I started to understand the storylines of each fifteen minute episode. The quick, dirty, and deranged humor was really funny! I like the later episodes better. Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad don't act so much as super heros as they do everyday people with strange challenges. Give the show a chance, but you must watch more then one episode.

Cartoons for adults, there are plenty. I know of many many more. I just don't watch the entire array available. If you ever catch yourself awake late, flip over to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. You can catch Family Guy and Aqua Teen Hunger Force there. Everyone knows The Simpsons are played 18 times a day on various Fox affiliates. I'm glad cartoons like these exist. Their pure entertainment value is greater then most everything else on TV. They are able to bend rules and expand boundaries untouchable by regular programming. You have to love it.

drawn together needs to not be shown anywhere near south park. it pales horribly in comparison.

stuber | November 14, 2004 4:09 PM

South Park = Has been.

if by "has been" you mean "the most on-point, influential, current, hard-hitting most emulated adult animated series today" then i would have to agree with you 100%

stuber | November 16, 2004 1:56 AM

No, I mean tired and occasionally funny.

By the way, who said anything about South Park? Oh wait, just you.

and?

Nevermind,,, I offered a suggestion to Simeon and you had to jump in and talk shit. Nobody asked for you to compare it to a show that wasn't even mentioned. South park was funny in 1997. Later..
