What Do You Think? - "Maple leaf masquerade"

I love visiting Canada. It is a beautiful country. I have met some super cool people and had some awesome times up north. Like any other country I have visited, some people have not been too kind. That being said, I will never sow a Canadian Flag on my backpack. I think that is quite possible the worst idea I have ever heard. Yes, people will make quick judgements about Americans. This will not stop me from being proud about my country. I think that if anyone who disagrees with me had a discussion with me, they'll realize I have an open mind. Granted, I do have certain beliefs, but I will listen to anyone else's. I understand the point of this article is that most people won't wait to discuss your ideas before harming you. I still don't care. I think it is a sad sad world when we have to hide from our own identity. If you are not an outlandish American and have respect for your hosts, I believe you can travel safely without hiding your identity.

Interesting article on a topic that we have encountered first hand many times Sim...I agree with you...it is a poor choice for an American to pose as a Canadian when traveling...if you are an "ugly american", well, no amount of maple syrup and hockey knowledge is going to hide that fact....your still going to come off as a d*ck...and if you are a normal american...then you should want to show people that not all americans fit our unfortunate stereotype... That said, unfortunately you are often judged as soon as someone finds out you are american...I remember canadians who gave us a snide..."Oh...you're American" as well as the Norwegian punk in Prague who lamblasted all things american while he was decked out in his Iverson Jersey and All things American Hip Hop style...and I've def. met some Canadians who could not have been more obnoxious...but to pose as someone you're not is a cowardly move in my book...Of course it's easy for me to say considering I was recognized as a cracked out local in every country we visited...I wish i could test this theory again in rio

I read about this yesterday, and I think you guys might be taking this a little too seriously, as the "Go Canadian" marketing scheme is obviously meant as a joke, and a quick way to sell T shirts. However, I do agree with you, Jeff and Simeon, that we should never hide our national identity while traveling, and there is rarely a real need to do so. i wish i was canadian

Jeff | December 8, 2004 6:20 PM

Oh, sorry for the confusion...i know the kit is a joke...and a funny one at that...a real zinger...I was not so much commenting on the article as I was our experiences while traveling...Though, the best part of the article is the advice for europeans to get clothing at JCPenny and Dockers when they get to America....Clearly, this is a ploy to get europeans beat up... On a side note, I think Mike High would make an excellent canadian

we should go to canaDUH and wait for someone to make a snide remark about our great nation. and remind them that they are still going to be canadian and the only thing they do for anyone is forvide air conditioning. i blame them for me freezing my ass off in the winter. simeon this conversation IS OVER!

Jeff and Rob, I have just received word that neither of you have been invited to Canada's yearly christmas party. I apologize, and understand the you both may be distraught.

Jeff | December 9, 2004 11:47 AM

That's ridiculous herczeg...if any of us would be invited to canada's christmas party...it would be me... FACTS: - My obsession with hockey led to an obsession with Canada when i was a youth - At the age of 5 my favorite song was "Oh Canada" (did i just admit that in a public forum?? oh well...it's true) - I took French in junior high because i thought i might move to Montreal or Quebec City one day (whereas you took it because you wanted to sound cool while eating cheese) - I know who canadian pop culture legend Don Cherry is...do you?? Didn't think so hoser... However, when Wayne Gretzky sold out Canada and went Hollywood in 92, the dream was over....If canada is not good enough for Wayne...it's certainly not good enough for me...

Jeff | December 9, 2004 11:48 AM

sorry herczeg...just got the joke...and i am in fact ...distraught p.s. the above still holds true

rob | December 9, 2004 12:13 PM

i am just as distraught as jeff. i have known canada for years as our weird, funny talking neighbor. it is very hurtful that, in this season of giving and coming together, canada would forget, or more appropriatley, purposly leave jeff and i out of a holiday celebration. in other news jeff and i will be throwing the christmas party to end all christmas parties this FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. there will be an abondance of spirits and spirts. not to mention many naked oiled women at our disposal. and canaduh is not invited this conversation IS OVER!

Jeff, Don Cherry was a coach of the Boston Bruins in the '70's who was well known for his hilarious rants towards referees and outlandish behavior and coaching style. He later became known for his hockey commentary and video series (of which I have seen several in grade school as my teachers were from Boston). No I did not just do a google search on Don Cherry....and please don't ever feel a need to test my hockey knowledge again. Not only am I invited to parties you have only dreamed of, but I also have just demonstrated how your life is my own personal 5-hole.....in the non sexual sense.

Jeff | December 9, 2004 1:47 PM

Sorry Herczeg...I guess I need to apologize...it's just been a rough week and I've been feeling a little left out lately...The fact that Canada did not invite me to it's christmas party must have pushed me over the edge...I mean...let's say Canada was having a x-mas party on Dec. 18...It would have been nice for my neighbour from the north to invite me (even if it is a 9 year tradition)...it's not like it would conflict with any other x-mas parties i would be attending... because I have not been invited to any x-mas parties...north OR south of the Mason Dixon Line... You think you know a country...and then it goes and pulls something like this....I hope Canada loses a shoe

rob | December 9, 2004 2:28 PM

right on jeff. you know, you shouldn't steep yourself in a tradition of exclusion.

High | December 10, 2004 12:00 PM

I concur with Jeff about Canada needing to have a shoe stolen. You, Mr. Yurshu, and I should start an international shoe heist.

Ihave Yurshu | December 10, 2004 2:04 PM

Done ! if you're going to be accused, you should take part in the crime...
