City of God

I just finished up this slamming film, City of God. The movie takes place in the City of God, a slum outside Rio de Janeiro. I have been itching to catch this flick for a few months. Its critically acclaimed, and about part of a city I am about to visit (rio prolly not the favelas). Its based on the true story of a young boy named Rocket. He doesn't get caught up in the gang wars and drugs that ravage this ghetto for much of the 60s and 70s. He is a lover of photography, and uses this outlet to make a life for himself.

Lets drop some words about the style. Think Snatch in Portuguese with English subtitles. Nice call Ritchie. The plot jumps back and forth like a "hood" dodging bullets. It begins in Rocket's childhood. You learn of the rise of Lil' Dice into Li'l Zé. This man has a thirst for blood from his first hold up. His only saving grace is his childhood friend Benny. Enough spoilers. As the movie progresses, the City of God is transformed into a safe place. A few gangs of "hoods" control the population through fear and drug dealing. One day, everything is turned upside down. A war begins that continues for over a year. Because of certain circumstances, Rocket is able to use the war to his benefit. How? Watch the movie. Again, his love for photography puts him in the right situation at the right time.

I really would recommend this movie. Be prepared for the subtitles, but you can handle it. The cinematography is top notch. The colors grab your senses, and pull all five to a darker side. The pain will make you queeze. You begin to hope for the murderers. Its an emotional roller coaster. I say, take a ride.
