Migs At Mosaic

I don't like to walk away from a musical experience and be dissappointed. It is bound to happen a few times. Last night, I saw Miguel Migs at Mosaic. Migs is my favorite house DJ. In my mind, his funky style sets him apart. Mosaic is a relatively new club at the Power Plant. Of course, music within walking distance can not be overlooked.

Mosaic is located in the back corner of Power Plant Live. Last summer, it was an outdoor venue at the front of the Power Plant. The new indoor location is cozy. The fire department sign said 240 people tops. The entire place consists of one room, bar, bathrooms, dj booth and a few vip areas. I like spaces this size. They force you to get personal with other concert goers.

I arrived earlier then Jon and Scott. They were spinning over at Shortys, but I can't walk to the Eastside. As people started to fill the room, I could see a large diversity unfold. Some people dressed up all posh. A few hippies were there. A few VIP types. Plus, kids in jeans and t-shirts. Honestly, I got to the door and thought I wouldn't be allowed to enter. I thought my t-shirt wasn't going to fit the dress code.

The first three djs were decent. Their styles of house were a bit too hard for me. A few tracks peaked my interest, but many were not dynamic. No one was really dancing. Everyone seemed to be waiting for the main attraction.

Around 11pm, Migs entered the dj booth. The crowd in front of the booth went crazy. A stage was setup to the left of the dj booth for Lisa Shaw to sing. Later in the evening, she started her first set. As the record left for Migs finished, he dropped some awesome tracks. He always picks music with lots of funky and jazzy layers. Its backbone is typical upbeat in your face house, but you get a more live performance feel with musical rifts. I think it is a great blend. He had the whole floor moving.

I am up in the air about Lisa Shaw. You can't deny her quality of voice, but she isn't much fun to see live. I guess, I am not into the produced music backing vocals thing for a live show. She is always the focal point for any track between her an Migs. Therefore, the music is more boilerplate house. During her sets, its not as much fun to dance. I'd rather listen to her at home and let Migs go crazy with the records.

As it always is in Maryland, the night ended just before 2am. This was good and bad. I had little to know sleep this week so, I could use a few more hours. (stupid work) As Jon mentioned, the party was just getting going... Everyone started dancing like crazy to Migs' last few tracks. As I walked home through the empty harbour, I was happy to have danced. I was left wanting more.
