The Bridge, Taking It To Us
For the second half of this summer, The Bridge have a residency at the 8x10. The are playing every Wednesday in July and August. We have tired to attend at least one show in July. We didn't make it. The first show we were able to attend was on August 1st. Its really tuff to make it out past 9pm on a work night. They don't take the stage until 11pm. I am normally in bed or close to bed by 11pm. I wanted to push the boundaries and make one show of the run.
The shows normally sellout so, you have to wedge your way into a space. We were extremely lucky to acquire a space on the second floor in the center. I believe, this spot is the best in the house -- anywhere along the rail, on the second floor, in the center. Throughout the night, one of us would stay in the spot while the other would grab drinks or go to the bathroom.
I really like The Bridge's sound. I was surprised that a band of this talent could come out of Baltimore. Then again, I was not completely familiar with the Baltimore music scene. After living here a few years, I have come to realize that Baltimore has a few amazing local bands. Anyway, The Bridge probably take the cake. The only gripe I have with their sound is dynamics. It is very cliche to say, "every song sounds the same." I hesitate to use this phrase, but it is slightly true. Their jam band sound isn't dynamic enough to break into the next level. They have excellent talent, but the jams settle in similar characteristics. I hope, they will continue to grow.
On this particular night, they had invited a few friends from Richmond, VA. A guest saxophonist and guitarist. Both were very talented, but I did not catch the name of their band. They also invited Monday's Open Mic Night Man in for some blues. It was crazy to see that old of a man control the room. He could barely stand without the use of a cane.
Overall, I feel we were part of Baltimore Music History. With a few more years of constant touring, I bet The Bridge will be playing mostly national tours. If I was a few years younger, I would have attended most of the run. The run is another reason why I love where I live. I can't imagine not living in a neighborhood that boosts a small intimate venue that regularly showcases national and local acts.
We left near the encore because; we couldn't make it until 2am. I am on the fence about checking out another show. I would really like to, but its very difficult. Especially since I have to go to DC for three days a week. Toward the end of August, I'll make a final decision. I would say, the experience is worth the lack of sleep. You have to live your life outside of work. The Bridge residency is an excellent way to accomplish this must.
