Streaming Viva La Vida
Coldplay’s latest album, Viva La Vida, isn’t due out in the US for a week. However, there is a stream available to preview the record.
My first reaction is good. I do like this album. It is typical Coldplay with sweeping sounds, changing emotions, driving rhythms and great energy. I’m only writing this after my first listen, so I’ll need a few more go-arounds to figure out my favorite tracks. However, here are a few I feel noteworthy.
“Lost!”
It has a nice constant backbeat and catchy layered sounds. The main lyric is an interesting one. When do things loose luster? Is he talking about his wife? The music business? Life?
“Lovers In Japan / Reign Of Love”
The keyboard riff caught my attention. It features swelling sounds and seems a very happy tune.
“Violet Hill”
I first noticed the guitar. It seems angry and grimy. A lot of Coldplay tunes lack a real gritty guitar part. Its no GnR, but what is?
“Strawberry Swing”
The guitar in this song is beautiful. Overall, the tune has a nice build up and refrain.
I’ll have to give it a few more listens; my impression will possibly change. I don’t think I’ll come to dislike the album. It seems solid right out of the gate.
For those wondering, Viva La Vida doesn't seem to translate from Spanish to English. La Vida means life, but I am not sure if Vida is a true Spanish word.
