Robesch Invades SoCal, Takes Over Valentine's Day
Valentine’s Day is always annoying. If you have a significant other, you have to find the perfect gift. You might be expected to “do something special.” I don’t really mind those things, but didn’t we just have Christmas? On the other hand, if you don’t have a significant other, what are you suppose to do? Do you take advantage of the massive sale on candy post V-Day? What if you just started dating someone, do you ask them out on Valentine’s Day? Hallmark can take this holiday and shove it. (Teresa, I still love you. Hope you liked your necklace).
You can imagine my joy when Rob said, “I’m going to be in San Diego 2/12-2/16!” Teresa was up for a quick trip down South, so the plans were made. I was spending Valentine’s Day with Robesch. He and Amy were visiting his brother Billy and his wife Colleen. It was an awesome group Valentine’s Day without all the red and funny shaped candy.
San Diego is about two hours from Long Beach. The drive down the 405 is really really pretty. Around San Clemente, the road flys past views of cliffs, shoreline and Pacific. It should have been paying more attention to the road.
Teresa and I met the other two couples at Jack’s in La Jolla. For those that haven’t been to La Jolla, I’d highly recommend the trip. Its definitely frou-frou but really beautiful. It was great to see Rob; I haven’t seen him since late last year. Amy, I can’t remember the last time I saw her. I believe it was the first time I was introduced to Billy and Colleen. We decided to wait for a table at Jack’s. After a few drinks, it became clear we weren’t high on their priority list. What, I’m wearing a sweatshirt? Alright, I’ll go get my meal elsewhere. Good thing I looked up the a few eateries before leaving. The La Jolla Brewhouse was only a few blocks walk.
We didn’t have any waiting issues at the Brewhouse. It was quite the opposite scene. We sat outside at a pub table next to an outdoor fire. The “waiter” and “waitress” just burned one down, and they were more than friendly. I can’t say one thing bad about the establishment. Their English style Oatmeal Stout was top notch, and I enjoyed a burger. Lunch was finally over, and it was only 3pm!
We down to the Ocean for views of Casa Beach or The Children’s Pool. Its a man-made spot normally filled with Sea Lions and Seals. Early last century, a sea wall was erected to create a protected beach for swimming. Nowadays, the large blubbery animals occupy most of the open sand. They’re so much fun to watch. The sun themselves, roll around and cover up in sand. Sometimes, they even make strange noises and flap their flippers around.
Our next stop was Pacific Beach. In my opinion, this is another must see spot in San Diego. Its more laid back than La Jolla, and it has large expanses of sand. We found another brewhouse with a top floor deck! Its called the Pacific Beach Alehouse. We crowded under heat lamps and watched the sunset. It was a very enjoyable couple of hours. Dinner was even tasty. After some lively discussion, we decided to close the day.
I really enjoyed hanging out with Teresa, Amy, Colleen, Billy and Rob. Thanks for making this a Valentine’s Day to remember! Lots of good beer and you can never go wrong. Of course, San Diego is a stunning spot. I still can’t get over all the beauty here in SoCal.
